Food moths are definitely unpleasant and unwelcome guests. If they have made their way into your kitchen as well, then you will definitely find our proven ways to get rid of them useful.
Food moths, or brown and grey butterflies, are definitely one of the least pleasant creatures to have in your kitchen. But here’s how you can effectively get rid of them.
To get rid of moths, first of all you have to throw away every infested product. Moths mainly like loose and dry foods such as flour, groats, rice and this is where the adult insects lay their eggs. The moth larvae are able to bite through the packaging film and squeeze through even the smallest gap. So if you see threads and droppings in the food, it means that they might have settled there. Throw all such products into a garbage bag, making sure to tie it tightly, and take it to the garbage immediately. As a preventative measure, it’s a good idea to throw away not only products where moths and their larvae are present, but also anything else they may have come in contact with
Once you have disposed of the infested products, be sure to clean all cabinets thoroughly, especially the corners – moths like to hide in these nooks and crannies because the food they eat can be found there. You can wash the cabinet with warm, soapy water.
To be sure, you can also use a solution of water with vinegar and citrus oil to wash the cabinets. A good way is to put a bowl of hot vinegar in the cabinet for several minutes. You can also scoop cloves into a dried orange and leave it on the kitchen shelf, place a clove infusion in the cabinet or put vanilla flavoring inside. A good trap that you can put in the cabinet is also wine vinegar with dry wine – this moth trap will effectively attract insects that will melt in the solution.
A solution that will help you in the fight against moths is an ecological trap. This is a good way to get rid of unwanted tenants that will be safe for you and your pets because they are free of harmful chemicals.
Another solution that you can use in your kitchen is mosquito nets. All you need to do is install them in the windows and at the ventilation outlet. This way, you reduce the risk of moths from your neighbor’s kitchen getting into yours
To prevent future moth infestations, you can store products such as cereals or flours in glass jars that will act as a barrier to the insects. Wipe the outside of the jars with wine vinegar, while you can put bay leaf or allspice inside to further deter stubborn moths. To be even more sure that food products are free of insects, before putting groats or rice in a glass jar, put them in the freezer for a few days.
Also, remember never to store foods, such as spices, in plastic bags. You are then creating the perfect conditions for moths to thrive.
