Herpes in children is not something to be underestimated. Although it is very similar to adult herpes, it has a much more serious course and symptoms. Read the article to find out how to deal with it.

Herpes can occur not only on the lips, but also inside the mouth, next to the eye or in the nasal passage. The lower age of children is characterized by a much more severe course and a longer treatment process. Do not ignore changes on the skin and take action right away

What is herpes labialis and what are its causes?

Herpes labialis is nothing but a lesion caused by the HSV-1 virus. It occurs in people of all ages, but most often in children and the elderly, as they have the weakest immunity. Children usually face the problem of herpes between the ages of 6 months and 5 years

The virus is dangerous because of the nature of its appearance and occurrence. It is often invisible for most of its existence and over time begins to weaken the body. It becomes especially dangerous during illness and during fluctuations in body temperature. HSV-1 always infects the most sensitive areas of the body and is characterized by rapid movement.

The cause of the virus is closer contact with other people. HSV-1 is transmitted by droplet and contact transmission. The most common infections result from contact with parents, daycare children or on the playground. Infection occurs through kissing, so affectionate greetings with strangers, licking forks or touching pacifiers are not advisable

The problem is often unwashed hands or washing them inaccurately. Therefore, it is very important to educate your child from an early age and show how to wash them properly.

How do I treat the herpes virus?

Before the occurrence of blisters with serous fluid, the child constantly scratches and feels a characteristic cold sensation at the site of the virus. In the next stage, purulent scabs form, which cause a lot of pain. In addition, there is often inflammation in the mouth, especially on the gums.

Herpes labialis in children is almost impossible to cure completely. There are only ways to help ease its painful course and help it heal. One such thing is cold compresses applied topically to the sore area. Do not give your child lemon, orange, pineapple or tomato drinks.

If you notice the first symptoms of herpes such as anorexia, drooling, swollen gums, malaise, enlarged lymph nodes, or fever, see your doctor immediately. An antiviral medication will be prescribed for the skin lesion.

When should you consult a specialist?

  • When herpes occurs in a newborn or infant child,
  • the virus has occurred in the eye area and causes redness,
  • HSV-1 causes chills, dizziness, nausea, listlessness and fever,
  • the blisters and redness do not go away after 10 days,
  • the skin around the blister is red and has a markedly elevated temperature,
  • the herpes has recurred and treatment has not been successful,
  • when the youngest struggles with the problem of eczema.

If your child has herpes, he or she should not share cutlery, glasses, or meals. Do not scratch the lesions and it is best to limit contact with other children.
